Week 38

Another Rabbit Hole

It took me almost 2-months to finish reading Ultralearning by Scott Young.

By the way, 2-months for me is a pretty fast read – I’m a slow reader lol. It’s one of those books that I had a hard time putting down. Now, what does this tell me?

I like to learn how to learn more efficiently and understand how people retain knowledge or skills. Why? So I can apply it for myself. It bugs me when I’m doing something I barely understand – especially at work.

That’s how I operated in school. I’ve also done that at work. It’s how I passed my brokerage license exam.

Getting a passing mark tells me that I understand the subject. But if I’m being brutally honest, I don’t fully understand the subject at all.

My knowledge is surface-level at best. That needs to change, especially on subjects that I’m very interested in. This leads me to another person of interest: Richard Feynman. Why?

I agree with his idea of fully understanding the basics – the focus on foundational skills as opposed to focusing on the advanced stuff.

Mañana Habit

Why would you do it today if you can do it tomorrow–when you’re not so tired..?

How come it isn’t OK to delay?

I understand that I’ve already done a lot of stuff today and I need a break.

Do I get a break? If so when? How long? How often?

How come it’s taking me a while to take on this project?

I have time now, but how come I’m not motivated to work on it? Is it because I’m tired and I need to rest?

Am I lazy?

Is this worth pursuing?

Why add more stuff to your bucket list?

These are questions I struggle with every weekend whenever I think about my side projects.

Sugarman

I’m re-reading JSAdweek.

See this is one of those books that I read 2 years ago but was not able to retain and understand all of its advice. Looking at my previous highlights, I wonder, “What the hell was I thinking when I highlighted this?”

Timing is a factor when it comes to reading books and retaining information. We are (obviously) more focused on reading books that are relevant to our current situation.

Mindlessly reading books, in my perspective, is a waste of time. This is where I would apply “quality over quantity”.

But I also learned that the best way to acquire and retain knowledge is by actually doing it. Reading is the easy part. The application comes much harder.

A Year Ago This Week

I wrote about…

  • yes, rabbit holes lol
  • my own E-magazine “MSPainted 001”
  • “efficiency over quantity” – lol my life goes on a cycle.

Goal Update

Personal Projects

Now that I’m almost done reading Ultralearning. The next step is to come up with Ultralearning Projects.

I’m going to leverage my current side projects that have been stagnant for a long time.

Health

Not a lot of stuff done in this area of my life other than mediation.

Sam Harris’s meditation app helps me to understand meditation better.

It’s not about positive thinking or relaxation.

It’s about being present – especially to my little Lexi

Finance

Paid off one my credit cards using my line of credit.

Still no improvement in my finances. Now that I’m a licensed life insurance broker, perhaps I can leverage that to help me clean out my debts.

One step at a time ombre, one step at a time.
