Week 43

Daydream

That’s what happens when you’re bored as f*ck.

I was in training all day on Tuesday to learn more about one of our supplier’s product.

Learned a thing or two – not as much as I thought I’d be learning.

While some of the attendees are struggling to stay up – I was actively thinking about product promotion for my artwork.

Because in my head, that was the intent of the training: to re-emphasize how good the supplier’s product is while strengthening the supplier’s relationship with the customer.

A win-win for both parties. And a big win for myself – as it gave me the whole day to come up with ideas on how to promote my work.

Leaving the office with fresh ideas, I wrote them all down as soon as I got home.

That training re-ignited my desire to build a side-income generator using my artwork.

Which then led to me to continue reading books about marketing – on understanding what makes something “viral” [Contagious by Jonah Berger] and copywriting [Kopywriting Kourse by Neville Medhora].

Then it led me to put more work on my personal blog’s…

About Page

I wrote a rough draft on Thursday, polished it this morning and then published it 3 hours later.

However, it felt like it’s still missing something so I ended up reverting the whole thing back to the way they were.

Sometimes, I find it better to not post anything that isn’t ready instead of posting something just for the sake of posting.

When it comes to communication, it’s best to keep your mouth shut if you don’t have anything valuable to say. Why?

You’ll look less dumb than you really are.

While that goal to finish updating my website this weekend failed, I was more successful at finally getting the chance to renew my…

Passport

I applied in-person where I waited for about 40-50 minutes to be served.

Their numbering/ticketing system was impressive (yea I pay attention to those little details. Why? I could use the same strategy someday).

I was customer #B912 and they are already serving customer #B907. I’m 5 customers away from being served.

Passport renewal does not seem to be that complicated. Hand in your application, you pay for it and off you go – easy peasy lemon squeezy.

This gave me the impression that I could be waiting for about 15-minutes max (not bad at all).

But no, I waited for a while. I couldn’t explain how this happens exactly but their system creates the impression that “it’s going to be a short wait…might as well stay”.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the number of people waiting (as soon as you walk in), it puts you at ease (which I find impressive).

If the wait isn’t worth it, we tend to go somewhere else or decide to come back another day.

When you see “train-crossing” lights flashing, you assess as to whether you should wait it out or find another route.

Or when you’re at the grocery store – constantly assessing the line on the other counters and the number of items each customer is carrying.

I’ve done both. I’ve taken a different route/counter before but ended up arriving at the same time as I would have if I waited. But of course, that’s not always the case. My point is…

We are always in a rush mode – no patience for waiting as if the next task we need to do cannot wait any longer.

And just like any other tools, time management is a useful skill – but only if used correctly.

The Passport Office’s Queue Management System may not be as fascinating to you as it was for me. Unlike those…

Tim Horton’s Hockey Cards

I don’t see the value in them but perhaps most kids do.

These cards are apparently sold out on almost all Tim Horton’s branches.

But I was able to find some.

My evil self is thinking about flipping them, sell them for a higher price – for whoever is desperate enough to get them.

BUT BUT

But that’s bad business – not something I want to be known for.

Flipping is not necessarily bad, it’s just that it’s not the method of earning money I wanted to develop.

However, there’s a bigger insight behind this. It points out the fact that:

you cannot put a price on something you highly HIGHLY value.

I’ve spent money on things this weekend (even when I’m in debt) that I don’t necessarily value.

But I’m sure it provides a lot of value to whoever is going to receive it.

Generosity can go a long way. But the gesture is really just a way to make up for my selfishness towards my schedule.

I’m sure you’re also generous but there’s something more I’m curious about…

What do you value?
