Week 34

Walked out of the bathroom, thinking about playing Assassin’s Creed—y’know, pick things up where I left off?

Ever since our Asia trip, I haven’t had a chance to turn on my PS4. But a more important question is, why am I craving to play? Or read a book, or binge-watch on Netflix. The lack of breaks from the constant cycle of my 9-5, parenting, and creating content can lead to burnout.

Life is busy–but I think that’s how it should be.

It’s been 3 weeks since I was given a big VBA code-related project.

Whenever I get asked, “What’s the update?”, I interpret that as, “What’s the hold-up? How come you are still working on it?”

I’m pretty sure my supervisor just wanted me to feed him something he could share with others. Without the update, it would make it seem like I’m not working on it. However, if it was the other way around, I hope they realize that I’m no expert at coding.

And because I’m no expert, it takes me longer to complete a project than your average coder.

I told myself I’m gonna focus more on practicing “Storytelling” this month than writing non-fiction articles for the biggest publications on Medium.

I thought I was gonna make pennies. But the current payout is at $10!

Here are my insights:

  • Medium changed its algorithm to make it easier for “engaging articles” to earn money. Fifty percent of that income comes from 1 article that was published by a major publication. Therefore, if I wanna crank up my income, I would need to focus on publishing with the biggest publications on Medium. Not that easy but doable.
  • The short stories I posted (as my way of practicing storytelling in public) did not make much. However, the goal is to learn the skill as opposed to making money. But here’s the insight: you need to be super clear with what you’re trying to accomplish. Is it money? Or skill acquisition? Or building an audience? They all seem to be related but they all use different metrics.

A Year Ago This Week

  • I was impressed with IKEA’s instruction booklet.
  • I finally announced I was going on a long parental leave.
  • I thought about starting an affiliate-business with Amazon.
  • What swimming with Swimply was like.
